Boost the performance of your MQB TSI car with the Garrett Powermax Stage 1 Turbo upgrade!

This is a hybrid like no other. Mainly because it isn’t even a hybrid turbo!! The Powermax turbos are specifically designed from the ground up using Garrett`s industry leading turbo technology as a direct bolt on upgrade for the IS38 turbo`s found on Mk7 Golf R`s, Leon Cupra`s, Audi S3`s etc…

They will also bolt up to replace an IS12 and IS20 found on Polo and Golf GTI`s too! As they are a plug and play turbo there is no modifications needed to fit, and with the correct supporting hardware and expert dyno calibration, will produce up to around 440BHP on 99ron. 485BHP is possible with E85. Our advice for road cars though, is to keep the fueling strategy simple.

We`ve had some great results when fitting the Powermax turbo to a standard car, and they can be fitted as a replacement unit if your stock turbo fails. To optimise for the best performance though, the following hardware upgrades are recommended:

  • Upgraded high flow intake  – Racingline R600 Intake
  • Upgraded high efficiency Intercooler  – Forge Motorsport Race Intercooler
  • Upgraded De-Cat / Sports Cat Downpipe – Trackslag 4″ Downpipe

These upgrades comprise the supporting modifications which are required to allow the Powermax Stage 1 Turbo to operate at its peak efficiency and produce the maximum performance increase available. They are all available via our webshop too!

A Turbocharged car will make peak performance when the charge system flows well and stays cool. The added flow efficiency along with perfect temperature control enables a much more dense air charge to be packed into the cylinder and combusted.

More air and more fuel = More Power!

We have just completed another PowerMax Stage 1 upgrade package to Shaun`s 8V Audi S3 which took it from a completely stock car to the sleek Deutche Rocket it is now! This is how we did it –>

The install was kicked off with the fitment of the turbo itself. The Turbo comes calibrated from factory, but we make sure to test the electronic actuators on every MQB car prior to fitment to ensure the correct wastegate to voltage calibration is used for perfect boost control. At the same time we also fitted a Trackslag 4” downpipe along with Res-Delete pipe to get rid of the exhaust gasses and add a sporty note to the existing system.

A Racingline R600 intake with elbow kit was chosen, which is by far the best performing MQB intake on the market, and looks very OEM+. To cool the charge we fitted a Forge Motorsport Race Intercooler which from our testing is the most efficient cooler for this platform. A new air con condenser was added to the package as they are often corroded and block the airflow, which lowers the effectiveness of the intercooler.

We calibrate every Powermax Stage 1 package in house which ensures that the tuning is completely custom and most importantly the best solution for every vehicle. FWD, AWD…? No problem. They both can achieve the same peak performance figures, even though they are generally calibrated differently for torque delivery and boost by gear strategies.

The Simos 18 ECU is a favourite for us, although it does throw some challenges up when building the right software to run the turbo.

With around 18% more air being available from the Powermax Turbo, it is imperative to get the fuel supply correct for the setup and achieve the air fuel ratios needed. We can meet this demand in different ways by either increasing the use of the high pressure injection system, or by supplementing with help from the low pressure MPI injectors (if fitted).

The Simos ECU`s flow factor boost control gets completely reworked to ensure that the turbo is controlled perfectly with no over boost, or over speed. On some cars we patch the software to allow better resolution of the ECUs feed forward PID system and deliver next level boost control.

The PowerMax Stage 1 Turbo is a fantastic upgrade for MQB cars and when complemented with good quality, efficient modifications can produce outstanding results.

If the car has a DSG transmission then the TCU software is also matched to the ECU tuning and also very importantly – tailored to the use of the car. This is an element which is often overlooked, but is something we pride ourselves on. We can deliver this with an in house calibration, or as the North East TVS Engineering dealer – a bespoke industry leading DSG solution from them.

Finally, if the road testing and logging doesn’t blow us away, or we are not happy with it then it gets sorted. No ifs, no buts – It has to be right, it has to be ballistic, and it has to drive amazing.
