You can`t deny the performance benefits or smooth driving aspect of the DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) that comes in most modern VAG group cars.
Although they are effectively just a manual gearbox, they utilise 2 clutches and a gear selection system which is operated by a group of solenoids and all controlled by an electronic control unit – The Mechatronic. The DSG combines all of this technology to offer you them seamless shifts, constant driving power and all whilst resting that clutch leg.
The gearbox oil is also the control fluid for the solenoids and clutches and is often worked hard. To that end it is imperative to keep up with correct servicing schedules, which for most DSG gearboxes is at 40k mile intervals. If the car is tuned, or used in harsh environments such as on track or used in motorsport then it is recommended to shorten the service schedule accordingly.

All DSG servicing includes a diagnostic health check, oil and filter change with genuine fluids only, and a reset of gearbox adaptations.
The VAG group did a great job with the software to control the range of DSG gearboxes, however even in stock form the characteristics of the box can leave a little to be desired with strange gear shift changes which feel clunky.
